News Article | 12th June 2010 » Lewis returns to Scimitars

Recruitment has gone really well during the close season for the Sheffield Scimitars and the roster is filling up nicely according to Head Coach.

"Matt Darlow and I are really happy with how talks have gone over the past weeks and are getting rather excited with the finishing line coming in to view in respect of player signings" he said today on announcing that Lewis Bell will be returning for his second season in the English Premier League.

Bell had his rookie term last season and grew each and every time he touched the ice. Head Coach was delighted with Bell's progression and said, "I have yet to come across such a player who sacrifices himself on a consistent basis for the good of the team. You see Bell, game in game out, throwing himself in front of pucks, which nullified many of the opposition offensive opportunities. Bell has a great set of fundamental skills which he uses to generate an edge during competition. He is able to do all the little things correctly and to a high standard, which is very important to any consistent defence man. Bell also has great ability to join the rush which provides extra depth to our offensive opportunities."
High praise indeed for the young lad from Nuneaton and Head Coach is delighted to be working with Bell for another season.

At the start of last season the Scimitars were considered to be the whipping boys of the EPL, such was the relative youth and inexperience of the team. Head Coach knew that his young side had the skills and abilities to compete at the EPL level yet was mindful of the need for his players to develop and grow. Lewis Bell was one such player and he knew he would have a major step to take if he was to secure a regular spot in the starting line-up.

By November, Bell had demonstrated to all who watched him, that he possessed the skill and ability to hold his own in the team and the leaguea. His performances went from strength to strength, finishing the season as one of the bright stars for the future alongside players like Matt Haywood and Tom Squires.
Head Coach labeled Bell "the King of self-sacrifice" such was Lewis's devotion to the team's cause.

He said of Bell "I'm really happy to be working with Bell for another season, he is still young, impressionable and is very receptive to new ideas and willing to learn. With his positive attitude and character he is certainly one to watch next season and in the future. He is working hard on his body, going to the gym 4/5 times a week, to get in peak physical fitness for the ensuing season."

Lewis came through the Sheffield Scimitars Academy and joined the EPL Scimtars from the U'18s at the start of last season. He is a skilled, young, offensive minded defenseman who loves to join the rush to create better scoring opportunities. A jester in the pack, especially when teamed with Matt Haywood he provides his team mates with lots of laughs. His bravery in front of net often leads to shots being blocked at key moments.

His signing on for a second spell is great news for the Club according to Coach Matt Darlow, "Bell is a very mobile defence man who carries the puck extremely well who is always looking to get forward as the 4th attacker. He plays with a lot of determination and is a true team player who has built his skills well over the last few seasons. He is very smart defensively and works very hard to deny time and space for opposing forwards, this coupled with good lateral movement makes him a difficult obstacle for any attack. It will be a pleasure to work with him again as he is a great guy."
