One of Sheffield Scimitars' big players will not be returning to the club in 2010/11.
Steve Duncombe has signed for EPL rivals Peterborough Phantoms where he played in 2002/3 season under Kevin King. This will be seen as a big coup for the Phantoms and a big loss to the Scimitars but it is a move that Duncombe himself made no secret of wanting to happen.
Last season Duncs played a big part in the Scims defence. One of the biggest players on the team and certainly one of the most experienced but his season got off to a bad start with a crushing injury suffered against Manchester. He took a while to get going after that and when he found his form he was unbeatable.
With so many young players on the roster the Scims looked to stalwart d-men like Duncs to bring the younger lads through and he did just that. With home-grown players like Lewis Bell and Arran Strawson becoming accomplished d-men in their own right, having played alongside the experienced old hands like Duncombe and Scimitars d-man of the season Lee Haywood, points not lost on Scims The Head Coach who said; "I spoke to Steve a couple of weeks back and told him about our plans for 2010/11 and budget constraints I was under. Steve was looking for something I couldn't offer and he told me about the other offers he had had. He was going to have a big think about his future and so this news is probably good news for Steve. I wish him well with his new Club."
Duncombe moving to Peterborough has left a big hole at the back for the Scims and Director Ian Johnson knows there are big boots to fill if the Scims are going to be suitably sized-up on the blue line.
Speaking of Duncombe's move he said, "I know that one or two players from last season were not happy with what they were getting but we have a business to protect and survival of the Club will usually be a priority over the team. That said, we are in the entertainment business and we need players who will entertain. Duncombe moving on provides the club with an opportunity to bring in somebody new, maybe a face no one knows, someone who will excite and get supporters off their seats. Jon and I have just the player in mind and we hope to make an announcement real soon."
