News Article | 19th May 2010 » Scimitars square-up Squires for a return

The 2009/10 season ended prematurely for Sheffield Scimitars young hot shot forward, Tom Squires. He suffered a serious shoulder injury a few weeks before the end of the season which kept him sidelined until the very last game where he managed to play his part in the Scimitars play-off game v Slough Jets.

That was early April and just 6 weeks later the Scimitars have agreed terms with Squires for his return for the 2010/11 season, adding yet more local talent to the Scimitars roster for next season.

Squires had a fantastic first full season last term and was one of the top centre-men in the team. He created great offensive opportunities and notched up a very respectable points tally for his efforts. As a centre-man it is important to have a great understanding of both offensive and defensive strategies and young Squires certainly has these qualities in abundance.

Last season Tom was moved around lines a lot bny The Head Coach who was attempting to create a balance throughout the playing roster. Squires adapted well in all of the adaptations which shows that he is a very versatile player. Head Coach commented, "I first started to coach Tom more than 13 years ago. Right back then it was apparent to me that he had something special and as he progressed through the Sheffield Academy teams, he became an impact player in every age group he played. Tom is a very talented player and I'm really happy to be working with him for another season".

Squires joined the Scimitars full time last season having previously cut his senior hockey teeth in the ENL with the Sheffield Spartans. Tom is a flair player, he likes to be the provider by making space either through the middle ice or wide on the wing. He still contributes to the points tally with goals and assists, a point not lost on the Scimitars supporters.

There was plenty of EPL interest in Squires' signature but Tom is a Sheffield lad who knows that his future development needs are best served in Sheffield. Coupled to the fact that he is also a budding Hockey Coach in his own right with the Sheffield Academy teams, there was really only one Club for Tom next season. On signing for the Scimitars, Squires said, "I had a couple of interesting offers to consider, which were flattering but I am settled in Sheffield and I know I have a job to do with the team and the Academy."

Squires' re-signing for the Scimitars was also good news for his Academy Coaching colleague Matt Darlow, who said "Tom is a big signing for us and someone that pushes hard every shift and gives his all for the team cause. Tom is a proven goal scorer who can find the net from anywhere and works hard off the puck to create time and space out there on the ice. It will be great to once again work with Tom and he will no doubt build on his growing reputation as a guy to watch out for this season".
