News Article | 10th May 2010 » Scimitars add another solid shot stopper

For the Sheffield Scimitars ice hockey club recruitment is certainly moving quickly right now, as the Coaching duo of Head Coach and Matt Darlow work around the clock to build their team for the forthcoming 2010/11 EPL ice hockey season.
Over the past couple of weeks Head Coach and Darlow have been looking very closely at the potential of their home-grown players who have been competing at ENL for the Sheffield Spartans. Last year the Scimitars relied heavily on the talented pool of players that play their hockey for the Spartans and with development and progression at the top of Head Coach's agenda, there's no better place to start your recruitment campaign than in-house when you have a successful junior set-up to call upon.
Having evaluated the prospects available for EPL, a number of players are in contention for a slot on the EPL Scimitars roster. The first of which can be confirmed today. Dimitri Zimozdra has been offered a slot on the Scimitars' roster as one of three netminders that Head Coach is looking to fill. Last season's top goalie, Ben Bowns, has already agreed terms with the Scims and now both coaches are delighted to have Zimozdra on board with the Scimitars' organisation for the 2010/2011 season.
Zimozdra was born in Moscow, Russia, and played a lot of his junior hockey in the top divisions, where he was looked upon as a talented individual. He then moved to the UK and continued his playing career in the Sheffield Ice Hockey Academy, where he has been part of many championship winning teams and has contributed to the success of each team he has played for.
Scimitars' Head Coach, Head Coach, knows Zimozdra very well indeed, as does Matt Darlow, who was Zimozdra's coach last season. Head Coach said: "I know it's the right time for Zimozdra to make the move up to EPL. He has outgrown ENL 1 hockey and I believe he now deserves a shot at the league above. I'm sure he will be a great asset and is capable of pushing for the starting position".
Zimozdra played last season for the Sheffield Spartans in ENL 1 and was the backbone of that team putting up some great numbers. He is a player who has a great natural ability and like Bowns before him has displayed great potential at ENL level which has obviously put him in contention for a move to the higher EPL level.
Darlow added: "Zimozdra is the most athletic goalie I have ever worked with or seen. He has the ability to demoralise forwards with his shot stopping capabilities. He was Spartans' number 1 last season who put up great figures throughout the 2009/10 season and will be looking to push all the way for a place in the Scims starting line up. Dima works extremely hard both on and off the ice to make constant improvements to his game and is as mentally tough as they come. I know he will be a great signing for us".
The Scimitars are close to agreeing terms with another import player and hope to make a further announcement on this before the end of the week.
