News Article | 26th May 2010 » Jones added as 3rd goalie for Scimitars

Rotherham's Paul Jones has been involved with the Sheffield Scimitars for many years and is no stranger to EPL ice hockey and knows the calibre of play that is required.

After a serious hip operation and more than six months of recovery and rehabilitation, Sheffield Scimitars netminder, Paul Jones is raring to go. It has been a difficult time for Jones being away from the game, but he had a tough call to make last September and it was the best decision to get the problem sorted as soon as possible to enable his playing career to continue.

After a long spell on the side lines Jones made his return to the ice in March when he resumed training and now he is looking to re-charge his career and get back his place as first choice goalie for the Scimitars. He has agreed to sign again for the Scimitars for the forthcoming season and understands that all goalies on the EPL roster will have to fight for their places for the competitive game day roster.

Scimitars Head Coach said: "I'm really happy to have Jones back on the roster. In a playing capacity, he was really missed last season for a variety of reasons but with him getting back on the ice I am hopeful that he will be ready for the start of the new season come September."

Jones is a compact goalie with great all round ability, he had cat like reactions which is his biggest asset. His last full season for the Scimitars was a great one and he earned himself a very enviable reputation around the league. But then injury struck and Jones lost out to Bowns who was ever-present and did a great job in his own rookie season. Jones will be looking to rekindle the form from two seasons ago and this will give Head Coach and his assistant Matt Darlow something to think about.

Darlow has produced a dry land program for Jones to be completed over the summer months, thus enabling him to start next season with peak fitness already achieved. Head Coach certainly missed Jones last season although Jones himself was usually seen around the rink on game day. Head Coach added: "Jonesy was a tremendous help last season, doing statistics and providing feed back after every game. It is now time for him to shine again through playing after his season out and I will be watching eagerly his progress."

Jones is added to the Scimitars roster as the third goalie announced by the Scims which is part of Head Coach's overall game plan, he said "I am running with three goalies again in training and I want to see which player is hungriest for the top spot. I like competition for places and so Bowns, Zimozdra and now Jones will all have to fight and work extremely hard if they are to retain a position on the starting line up."

The Scimitars will commence practice in late July.
