News Article | 15th May 2010 » Butterworth calls time on Scimitars' career

One of the Sheffield Scimitars ice hockey teams most dependable players has decided to concentrate on his career which is bad news for the Scimitars as they try to build the team for 2010/11 EPL Season.
Simon Butterworth has informed Head Coach that he will not be joining the 2010/11 playing roster for the Sheffield Scimitars as they mount a renewed assault on the English Premier League title which is due to start on Saturday 18th September.
Butterworth has enjoyed a long successful career in Sheffield both at the Scimitars and also at their Elite League neighbours, Sheffield Steelers. But with a final year at university ahead of him and with a massive increase in work load as well as taking on a high profile job at ice Sheffield, Butterworth is unable to commit to the rigorous schedule of EPL ice hockey.
On hearing the news Head Coach was gutted and said, "I have a lot of respect for Butterworth as a person and as a player. He has helped build the Sheffield Scimitars organisation to what it is today. I am sorry to see him leave, but totally understand the situation he is in. He wants to be successful in life as he has been in hockey and I want to wish him all the very best with his future endeavours."
Butterworth has been a loyal and hard working player for the Scimitars. Known as one of the most technically gifted skaters in the league, Simon has always been a high speed and direct type player who creates many chances through his vision and quick thinking. Butterworth has won numerous gold medals with Great Britain teams he has played for as well as earning himself an enviable reputation around the league as one of Sheffield's high profile players.
On announcing his decision Butterworth said "I need to take some time out to finish off my studies and concentrate on establishing my career which I will need after I finish hockey. I could carry on playing but at this time my priorities are elsewhere and so it's best that I don't make a commitment that I might not be able to keep."
Scimitars The Head Coach will miss Butterworth's tenacity and work rate and said "Buttsy was a great asset to the Scimitars, he has top level credentials and they are not easy to replace but I know that he has to prepare for life after hockey and so I know he has not taken this decision lightly. There's time for Buttsy to come back to the team and I have left the door open for him when the time is right for him."
The Club wish Simon Butterworth all the very best for his future and look forward to the day when he can pull on a Scims jersey again, let's hope we don't have to wait too long!
