25th January 2010
Sheffield Scimitars have today confirmed the signing of British defenceman Ben Wilson. Hailing from Nottingham the 22 year old is the latest addition to a Scimitars roster that is dominated by young British talent and Wilson will be sure to add some much needed size and strength to the blue line.
On signing for the Scims Wilson said "I am really happy and so grateful to Coach for giving me a chance. I have so much to learn about the game and I am desperate to help the team in any way I can, I can't wait for my first training session." Ben played junior hockey in Nottingham and although only in his early twenties he has plenty in his game to interest the Scimitars.
Scimitars Head Coach Jon Rowbotham said today "Recent results haven't quite gone according to plan and I felt we were missing something from our game especially when we need a go-to guy to help our young forwards. I think Ben might the sort of player who will help us to find space out on the ice so that we can return to the free-scoring play that we enjoyed earlier in the season."
At 6' 2" and 275 lbs, Wilson is one of the biggest players on the Scims roster. He is an uncompromising player who can be strong on the puck and will bring an edge to the roster too. A quiet man in the dressing room, Ben is not one for shouting the odds, he is quite the opposite. Rowbotham added "It's no secret that my strategy is always to win the score board battles not the handbag battles and even with big player on the roster that will not change. The Scims have made fast flowing hockey our trademark for this season and I want that to continue."
The Scimitars ended a 7 game losing streak on Sunday when they beat Romford Raiders 8 - 2 in Romford. Rowbotham continued "I was pleased with our performance last Sunday at Romford. The team badly needed a win and I was delighted with our application which had eluded us these past few weeks. I hope we can go on to regain our form and continue with the great work we started last September."
Wilson has been cleared to play in this Thursday's re-arranged fixture at Altrincham where the Scimdogs will face Manchester Phoenix. The Phoenix roster now includes ex-Scimitar Stephen Wallace but they are seemingly without Andre Payette. Ben's home debut will be on Sunday 31st January at Ice Sheffield when the Scims entertain Slough Jets, face off at 5:30pm. Tickets for the game at ice Sheffield will be available at the door, usual prices apply.
