News Article | 31st December 2009 » Scimitars Festive Shirts deliver a late Christmas present

The Scimitars produced a specially commissioned game shirt which was worn by the players over the festive period and these shirts were auctioned-off after the game v Guildford last Sunday night. The idea being to raise some much needed funds for the Club and make a donation from the proceeds to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal.

The shirts produced by Eckington-based Rhino Sports were based on a Christmas theme and are not unlike those produced by Elite Clubs such as the Steelers.

On the night, the auction generated quite a stir when a Guildford Flames supporter bid £350 for the two netminder jersey's worn by Ben Bowns and Pasi Raitanen. Lisa Botting from Farnham in Surrey had travelled to ice Sheffield to see the Scimitars take-on the Guildford Flames as well as to try and secure at least one of the unique Scimdogs jerseys to add to her collection of netminder jerseys. Upon hearing of Miss Botting's generous offers Scimitars' Director Gary Apsley removed the two jerseys from the auction and made an on-ice presentation to Miss Botting who was delighted with her latest additions, she said, "I came to Sheffield tonight to see my team put in a good performance which they did and I've also won two fantastic shirts which is a real thrill for me, I am really pleased".

Mr Apsley said "When Sue Cooper told me about the two bids for the goalie shirts I knew we had to reward Miss Botting's generosity and I was glad we did because I think we found a new friend for the Club, even if she does live in Surrey!"

The auction for the shirts generated £1,600 for the Club of which £160 is to be donated to the Cancer Appeal at Weston Park Hospital along with the £100 from the bucket collection which the fans generously donated to. The Scimitars Directors are no strangers to supporting the Cancer Appeal, just 18 months ago Gary Apsley and Ian Johnson raised a staggering £32,000 for the good cause through their Pro-Am ice hockey match and whilst £260 is a small sum by comparison, it is further demonstration of the pairs commitment to supporting the local community. Mr Johnson said "A donation of 10% of the proceeds to the Cancer Appeal is still good news for the charity and I know that the team at Weston Park will be delighted with the donation because every little helps and I'm sure this won't be the last time we raise money for such a worthwhile good cause like this one is".

The results of the shirt auction are:

No. 2 Archer £85
No. 4 Butterworth £60
No. 5 L. Haywood £65
No. 8 Duncombe £75
No. 11 M. Haywood £60
No. 14 Wallace £55
No. 16 Squires £80
No. 19 Hirst £55
No. 20 Slamiar £120
No. 21 Bowns £175
No. 22 Gibson £60
No. 23 Wilcox £60
No. 24 Brittle £105
No. 30 Jones £125
No. 33 Raitanen £175
No. 44 Bell £60
No. 61 Strawson £80
No. 67 Stewart £105

There were a couple of interesting outcomes during the auction. The first was Scimitars side-lined goalie Paul Jones who is recovering from hip surgery and whose shirt fetched £125, interesting because this shirt had not been worn but supporters demonstrated their faith in Paul wishing him a speedy return to action. The second was for Stuart Brittle's shirt as two young ladies battled out a tense bidding war to try and secure the shirt for themselves much to Brittle's surprise.
