News Article | 9th December 2009 » Farmer goes AWOL to Steelers?
The Scimitars wish to inform their supporters that NO deal has been concluded regarding a permanent move by Robert Farmer to the Sheffield Steelers.
Scimitars' Director Gary Apsley has today expressed "serious disappointment" at the article in The Star in which Steelers announce that Farmer has signed full-time.
He said "Scimitars' Coach and Management reluctantly agreed to release Farmer for the trip to Italy with the Steelers for the reasons given in the announcement on 26.11.09, but this was in the expectation of his subsequent return to the Scimitars. Robert is a major part of the Scimitars recent successes and that is why the Steelers are interested in him, but he is a Scimitars player and we do not have a two-way agreement in place for him".
Farmer's development had been an EPL hot topic for two years or more so this situation was bound to happen sooner or later, but for the Scimitars the approach by the Steelers for Farmer was not welcome and this is a point not lost on Steelers GM Mike O'Connor, as confirmed in the article.
Robert himself was flattered and excited over the approach by the Steelers he said "it's a great chance for me and I hope no one will blame me for following my dream?"
Apsley added "Certainly this is a great opportunity for Robert and nobody wants to stand in the way of his chance at the big time but we have a players' registration and contract that ought to be protected and at this time it appears that the player and Elite club simply wish to ignore these.". He went on to say "I have had minimal contact with the Steelers and until today had not heard from Robert so finding the news in The Star was rather upsetting especially as I thought I had an understanding with Mike O'Connor".
The Scimitars have been under increasing pressure due to a shortage of home games and so the last thing they needed was their star forward to go absent even though the chance for Farmer is a good one.
Apsley, who is currently on holiday, expects to be talking to the Steelers early next week and this subject will be near the top of the agenda.
