News Article | 12th August 2009 » Slami Returns for 3rd Season

The news that Scimitars supporters have been waiting for all summer is announced today as Scims Ops Director, Ian Johnson, confirms that Peter Slamiar's contract has been signed by the popular Slovakian who will return to the new-look Scimitars.

Slamiar has played for the past two seasons in Sheffield and is looking forward to the new 2009/2010 regime he said "I have kept in touch with the Club during the summer and when Martin (Birch) came to my hometown we talked about nothing but hockey and the Scimitars. I know Martin has moved-on but he was really excited about what is happening in the Club that I knew it was right to come back to Sheffield".

The Slovakian born forward comes from a popular hockey nation where many players develop into top-level professionals due to the rigorous training and development structure administered by the Slovaks. Slamiar has represented his country on many occasions always putting-in a good performance which shows the calibre of the player he is. Peter has played in many great teams during his career and has experience of playing in many different countries where he has always tried to develop his game whilst contributing to the team's aims and objectives.

Scims The Head Coach is a great admirer of Slamiar's, he said of his latest signing, "I would think Slami's greatest achievement in the sport was when he was drafted by the New York Rangers in 1995. There aren't many players in the UK who have this type of credential that they can put on their hockey résumé". He added "I watched Slamiar perform on many occasions last season and was impressed with him. He is certainly a player who I can work with and I'm sure he too can help those around him to develop into better, more fully rounded players."

Slamiar is a player with extremely high level of basic and fundamental skills. Like all of the top professionals Slamiar uses the basic skills to devastating effect. Doing the simple things consistently well is a hallmark of a great player, in this department Slamiar doesn't disappoint, indeed such qualities have been witnessed by many during his game performances over the past couple of seasons in Sheffield and on the road.

But it's not all about the basics with Slamiar. He has great vision on the ice and is a renowned points accumulator too. In his first season with the Scimitars he notched-up 56 points in 38 games and last season he ended the season with 60 points in 49 games. The Scimitars fans know that Slami is a player that never gives less than 100% in everything he does. Head Coach is thrilled that the Slovak has agreed to return and said "I'm sure Slami will have a tremendous season next term and that he will give the fans plenty to talk and get excited about. I regard Slamiar as one of the top non-British trained players in the EPL and I am sure our supporters will welcome him back with open arms and join me in wishing him all the very best for the 2009/2010 season."

The signing of Peter Slamiar comes just at the right time for the Scimitars who have a busy pre-season schedule mounting-up and the addition of Slamiar has given everyone involved with the Club a bit more inspiration. Johnson said today, "The off-season has been an extremely busy period of time for all of the staff involved with the Scimitars, indeed the summer has flown-by. John and I are still negotiating with another couple of players and we hope to have things tied-up in the next couple of days so that we can make further announcements before the end of the month" Head Coach added, "The on-ice training for our British contingent started last week together with on and off ice fitness testing which will be conducted by Ross Burbeary who has been drafted-in from Doncaster Rovers FC to support the Scims with sports science and physical training. I want our team to be sharp and fit when the first game of the season comes round on 19th September."
