Sheffield Scimitars (EPL) v Hull Stingrays (Elite) 0-2 26.8.09
A great start for the Scimitars after an intensive off-season as the new owners re-structured the Club and Head Coach, Jon Rowbotham built his team. After just three weeks of training and missing imports Peter Slamiar and Joakim Millqvist, the team played a very competitive game.
The pre-season challenge game which was held at iceSheffield last night was a good workout for both teams and two new coaches, and although on paper this would appear to be rather a mismatch regarding player experience and number of imports, it did not look that way on the ice.
With just one import for the Scimitars, returnee Pasi Raitanen between the pipes for half the game, and lining three ENL players instead of their import players who will be arriving in the UK next week, the Scimitars gave the fans a taste of the season to come.
The Scimitars looked sharp and were unlucky not to score, being held out by Stingrays new goalie, Tommy Sandahl. With shots on goal even at 27, the Scimitars made Hull work for the 2 goal win as both Raitanen and Ben Bowns prevented the score from being higher. There was even some dispute on the legitimacy of the first goal scored by Shaun Thompson at 08.40. Stingrays Captain Jeff Glowa scored the second and final goal of the evening on the powerplay at 44.38.
After being billed by some in the EPL as the 'basement boys' this season, last night's game proved that new coach, Jon Rowbotham and his team could hold their own against a higher league team and the Scimitars' fans will look forward to the next home Challenge game, 12th September, 7.30pm, when ex-Elite Manchester Phoenix and new 'local' rivals roll into town with legendary Tony Hand, plus Ed Courtenay, both ex-Steelers to really test their level.
