News Article | 17th August 2009 » Scimitars Season is Off and Running
The new-look Sheffield Scimitars began their 2009/10 campaign last night at Ice Sheffield when they entertained a Combined Armed Forces team in the name of charity.
With ice time always at a premium the Scimitars were delighted to be able to offer our boys from the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force the chance of some quality game time on a big stage at Ice Sheffield. Icing three lines, one from each service the Combined Armed Forces were always going to have a tough time containing the new-look Scims but in their line or work containment of difficult opponents is an everyday occurrence. That said the event was a welcome relief for family and friends and the boys did themselves and their service proud when they took to the ice.
The game itself was a good hearted encounter with the Scimitars showing some good pre-season form even though they were missing some of the team. As they were also without latest signing Peter Slamiar, The Head Coach offered a starting position to Elite League guest player Ben O'Connor who along with Robert Farmer, Tom Squires and Simon Butterworth notched-up quite a few points and gave the approx. 500 crowd something to cheer.
But it wasn't all one-way and the Armed Forces made it a tough job at times keeping the Scims out. And while the 'Forces goalies saw plenty of rubber, they were both in top form which provided a good workout for the new-look forward lines being trialled by Head Coach for the first time.
At the final buzzer the game ended '11 - 8' in favour of the home team but the biggest cheer of the night was at the announcement of the Man of the Match for the Armed Forces, not the two netminders, but the whole team which saw our Combined Armed Forces receive a standing ovation from the crowd.
Speaking after the game, Sergeant Stuart of the British Army said "Our boys have had a great day today. It's the first time our team has played together and we found it really tough against a good team. But, we fought hard and battled to the end and I couldn't ask anymore from our players. We've met a great bunch of lads in the Scimitars and I hope that we can meet-up again in the future for a re-match!"
Scimitars The Head Coach was full of praise for the 'Forces players he said, "They did really well tonight and their quality players caused us a few problems which my players had to deal with. It was great for us to be able to give them a game and the support from the fans was first class. I was pleased with the work rate from my team and I am reasonably happy with what I've seen from our first outing. We will now be preparing to entertain Hull Stingrays in 10 days time."
The Scimitars have a busy pre-season schedule arranged with a number of games planned over the next four weeks starting on Wednesday 26th August when the Elite League's Hull Stingrays visit Ice Sheffield.
