The gauntlet's been thrown down and the challenge has been accepted…with the curtain raiser on Saturday 12th September 7.30pm...
More than five centuries after the last battle for supremacy between Lancashire and Yorkshire, armour-clad warriors wielding sticks instead of swords and sporting skates will once again cross the Pennines to do battle, this time on ice in a modern day 'War of the Roses'.
This English Premier League pre-season clash features league newcomer the Manchester Phoenix versus the Sheffield Scimitars in a two-legged contest during the weekend of Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th September.
With Sheffield hosting the first leg at iceSheffield, a veritable fortress in the 'Steel City', on Saturday 12th, Scimitars boss, Gary Apsley said: "This is another great initiative for ice hockey, and I'm really looking forward to testing our metal against what is shaping up to be one of the league's top sides.
It's also an early opportunity to welcome back to Sheffield, the Phoenix Player Coach Tony Hand MBE who, as every British ice hockey fan knows, was a hugely popular Steelers legend."
Phoenix boss, Neil Morris, was equally enthusiastic, saying: "Games involving teams from Manchester and Sheffield have always been lively encounters and I'm really looking forward to seeing how we fare against one of the league's powerhouses. Both teams have proud traditions and I hope that we can generate some real rivalry for the benefit of our respective fans and the sport in general."
