News Article | 10th June 2009 » 2009-2010 English Premier League Format Confirmed
Following the EIHA AGM last weekend, 6th & 7th June, the composition of the English Premier League, as well as the League, Premier Cup and Playoff format can now be confirmed for the 2009-10 season.
The Premier League will again comprise 10 teams, welcoming in Basingstoke Bison and Manchester Phoenix from the Elite League, and who will provide the other 8 teams, Bracknell Bees, Guildford Flames, Milton Keynes Lightning, Peterborough Phantoms, Romford Raiders, Slough Jets, Swindon Wildcats and the Scimitars with some stiff competition. Regretfully Telford Tigers and Wightlink Raiders will not be competing this season, though the Scimitars will look forward to playing against another Northern and more 'local' rival.
The playing format remains the same, 54 regular League games with each team playing 3 home and 3 away against their opponents, and the season commencing on 19th & 20th September.
The Premier Cup will again run concurrently with the initial League games, when the first home and away game against each opponent (18 games) will count for double points - ie 2 points for a win in both the League and Cup tables. The top 4 teams from the Cup table will progress to the semi finals, which is on a home and away two-leg aggregate basis. The semi finalists will compete in another two-leg home and away Cup Final.
As last season, the Premier League Playoff format will consist of a single quarter final weekend of home and away aggregate games for the top 8 teams, with the top 4 teams then progressing to the Playoff Finals weekend in Coventry on April 10th and 11th 2010.
The Playoff quarter finals opponents will be based on the final League standings as follows:
1st place v 8th place
2nd place v 7th place
3rd place v 6th place
4th place v 5th place
The top seeded team in each quarter final will earn the right to choose their home leg quarter final date in that weekend.
