The new four-star Copthorne Hotel Sheffield, which opens on 17 November, is to be the main title sponsor of the highly successful Sheffield Scimitars Ice Hockey Team for the 2008/9 season.

In addition to achieving considerable success in the English Premier League (EPL) and reaching League and Cup semi-finals in the last three seasons, the team also boasts the highest number of "home-grown" players in the League, six of which are currently British Internationals.

Based at the £15.6m iceSheffield development, which attracts over 350,000 visitors a year and offers a 1500-seat ice arena, the Sheffield Scimitars is the newest and youngest team competing in the EPL and is fast becoming one of the sport's major brands.
"Our aim is to become Sheffield's leading hotel for business and leisure, so linking up with the Scimitars is an excellent way to become further engaged in the local community and help raise our profile amongst a wide target audience," says Orla Watt, the Copthorne's General Manager.

"The great work done by the Scimitars Academy and the club's ongoing work with charities such as Sheffield Children's Hospital and Cash for Kids were also key drivers behind our decision to become title sponsor," continues Orla.

As the main title sponsor, the Copthorne brand will appear on home and away first team shirts and also be carried on official club clothing, literature and merchandise.

"We are delighted to have worked with the Scimitars to help them to secure the Copthorne as their main sponsor for this season. I know the hotel will benefit enormously from involvement in what is an exciting, fast-growing and popular sport both here in Sheffield and nationally," says Danny Stones, Managing Director of the Full Time Group.

Martin Birch, Chairman of the Scimitars added, "This is a great association for us and this season will be particularly exciting as our new Head Coach, Ron Shudra, a legend in UK ice hockey and an ex-NHL player with the Edmonton Oilers, has been busy building a dynamic new team."

The 158-bed purpose Copthorne hotel, which is being built at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane Stadium, will offer the most extensive conferencing facilities east of the Pennines, with executive suites, meetings rooms, 100-cover 1855 restaurant and bar, and a state-of-the-art fitness suite that incorporates a 56-station gym.

Equipment levels throughout the hotel are first class with each bedroom offering guests a range of facilities and services including computer modem point, internet access, hospitality fridge, radio and TV, voicemail and safe.
