'The Rocket man's' new role with the Scimitars

The greatest name in Sheffield ice hockey is the new player-coach of the Sheffield Scimitars.

'Rocket' Ron Shudra takes over from Neil Abel as the Scimitars build for an exciting new season in the English Premier League.

Earlier this week, the club announced that chairman and benefactor Martin Birch is to stay on.

The 41-year-old Canadian cannot wait for the new season to start. He said: "I can understand why the fans are getting excited. Martin Birch is remaining and we are in the throes of building a strong squad capable of taking the Scimitars that extra step further."

"The club have reached the play-offs for the last three seasons and Shudra now wants silverware at the club's iceSheffield home.

"The guys I am speaking to for next year's squad know what I am expecting. I will be developing them so that they are ready to play at a higher level. We will be a tight outfit, difficult to beat," added Shudra who is also aiming to add to his 1,000 plus games in 23 seasons of ice hockey in North America and the UK.

Scimitars chairman Martin Birch said: "Once Neil Abel decided to step down as coach at the end of this season, there was really only one candidate to take over the reins of this successful team.

"Ron has been an excellent captain since joining the Scimitars from the Steelers two seasons ago, leading his younger team mates by example on and off the ice. He has already demonstrated his coaching credentials when standing in for Neil, as well as on the ice during every game.

"I am confident that Ron will build another strong Scimitars squad within the budget I have given him to work with and we look forward to another great season challenging for silverware," added Martin.

The Scimitars will be announcing their game ticket prices and season ticket details very shortly.
