Firefighters from Sheffield who saved two Scimitars players from a blazing terrace have been thanked for their bravery.

The firemen, based at Rivelin Valley fire station, in Sheffield, were called to Stuart Brittle and Peter Slamiar's Crookes terrace in the early hours after a neighbour's home caught alight and fire threatened to spread.

The pair were both asleep when the fire broke out.

After some hard games at the weekends, the players slept through the drama and only woke when a fireman climbed up a ladder and shone a torch through their windows. The flatmates had slept through repeated knocking by the firemen thinking it was rowdy students.

Stuart explained: "I heard some banging but just thought it was drunks or students so I went back to sleep.

"The next thing I knew there was a fireman at my bedroom window shining a torch in. We got out pretty quick after that!

"We're really grateful that the firemen persisted and we wanted to say a big thank you by giving them our shirts."

Stuart and Peter presented members of White Watch with Scimitars shirts and VIP tickets to a forthcoming game during a visit to Rivelin Valley fire station.
