News Article | 29th November 2007 » New Signing - James Archer

The Sheffield Scimitars are very pleased to announce the signing of new forward and GB U20's James Archer, who should be joining the team for this weekend's home action on Saturday against Chelmsford and whom we welcome back to Sheffield.

James spent the majority of his junior career in a Sheffield shirt, playing his last game for them in the U16's National Finals win in Nottingham against Swindon when he was 14 years. He then moved to Peterborough U16's, playing up to U19 and then English Premier League and has played there for the last five years. He increased his points tally from 38pts in 05-06 to 77 points (G46, A31) in 51 games last season, which will be a big boost to the Scimitars if he can continue to put those points on the board. He was winner of Best Forward and Best Young Player of the Year in Peterborough in 05-06 season, donned a GB shirt in 06 & 07 and is in this year's squad also.

Having caught up with James during the U20's v Scimitars challenge game on Tuesday, he explained that he had asked to be released from Peterborough because of family and personal reasons and Neil had offered him the chance to join the Scimitars. James said 'It will be different pulling on a Sheffield shirt again, but I am looking forward to it. It will be interesting playing against Peterborough in the first meet up on 29th December'. He will also be facing ex -Peterborough and team mate Shaun Yardley on Saturday against Chelmsford. James has a two-way contract with Coventry Blaze with whom he trains twice a week plus games when there are no EPL clashes, and he hopes to continue this now he is back in Sheffield.

Coach Neil Abel was glad to have him on board saying 'he is normally a pain to play against so it will good to have him on our side instead. It will also give us more depth so that I can move the lines about if I need to and keep the other boys on their toes'.

James is also coming in at a good time when import Patrik Moberg is out injured from last Saturday's game and the Scimitars will be hoping to recover their scoring touch for this weekend's games after last Sunday's 0-3 loss at home.

The Scimitars take on Chelmsford Chieftains on Saturday, 1st December, face off 7.15 at iceSheffield in their first Knock Out Cup game. They then travel down to Swindon on Sunday and will hope to come home with two League points to maintain or improve on their current 3rd position.
