News Article | 14th September 2007 » Scimitars hold the Steelers to a draw

The Scimitars started their 07-08 campaign with a challenge game against the Steelers, who hosted it in the Scimitars' home venue, iceSheffield.

Both teams were missing an import (9 v 3) plus the Scimitars were without James Goodman and both were short on formal training sessions. The Scimitars' new full-time signings from the Academy included Ollie Barron, Lee Haywood and the youngest player Robert Farmer, who all acquitted themselves well, with Aaron Strawson from the ENL filling in for Goodman. The fans also able to watch the other two new signings, Steve Wallace and Slovakian, Peter Slamiar and in front of a good-sized crowd the two Sheffield teams put on a spirited game.

Neil Abel was very enthusiastic about the 3-3 result, and felt that "the overall team performance was brilliant". Going in to the break after the first at only 1-0 down was excellent, and he was pleased that despite going 2-0 down in the middle of the 3rd, their heads did not drop. Peter Slamiar's "peach of a goal" for his first for the Club pegged the score back to 2-1 with Morgs slotting in the equalizer on the powerplay to end the 2nd at 2-2. The third period was end to end hockey with the Steelers stepping it up by going 3-2 up with a bullet from one of their top imports, Legue, but Dowdy then scored the 3rd Scimitars' goal along the ice to level the scores.

It might have been only a challenge game and the Steelers may not have had many practice sessions, but the Scimitars gave a good account of themselves on the night and it will have boosted their confidence.

The Scimitars travel to Telford on Saturday for the first competitive game of the season (EPL Cup), followed by the first League game against Swindon on Sunday, face-off 5.30pm.
