News Article | 14th September 2007 » A cracking start to the season
The Scimitars enjoyed a successful 4 point weekend to start the new season, trouncing Telford Wildcats in the opening Cup game by 9 goals to 2, and then a more difficult win against Swindon Wildcats 3-1 in a League game.
The win in Telford was achieved by great team effort with the goals being shared out, and with coach, Neil Abel, still evaluating lines as the 4th import signing, Patrik Moburg, had not long arrived in the country. It was an action-packed game of goals, penalties and fights in front of a good crowd of travelling supporters. Coach Neil Abel said "when we settled in and started to play, I thought the guys were awesome. We skated for every puck and never sat back when we went a few goals in front, which we used to do."
Sunday's game was tougher and more physical, though the Scimitars worked hard all game for a well-deserved win. Penalties were not as big an issue as the previous match which helped the flow of the game. Neil Abel felt that on Sunday it was a different game altogether. "Whether we didn't know what to expect from Swindon because they have revamped their team as well, I don't know, but we got on with the job at hand. The game was tight all the way through but that's what we have to expect this season. I think every game is going to be tight with no run away teams this year, which can only be good for the league."
He is happy with the results so far with team gelling nicely and the new players are all looking good. He will not be complacent though as this weekend will be a good yardstick of how the Scimitars measure up in the League. Peterborough Phantoms are in town on Saturday night, face-off 7.15pm following the ENL Scimitars (4.30pm FO), this promises to be a fast and physical game as they have strengthened considerably since their strong end to last season. The Scimitars then travel down to Peterborough for their 2nd Cup game of the weekend.
