News Article | 7th August 2006 » Ex-NHL player signs for Scimitars

The Sheffield Scimitars are please to announce that "Rocket Ron Shudra" has agreed terms with the Scimitars for the 06/07. Ron a firm fans favorite has played with the likes of Wayne Gretsky when he iced for the Edmonton Oilers, and even assisted him on a goal! Since then he has iced for the Solihull Barons, but he is best known for the time he has spent with the Sheffield Steelers over the past 13 seasons. He is both a professional on and off of the ice. The Scimitars fans can look forward to watching him in both a defensive and offensive role and he can still put in a slap shot with the best of them.

From his home he said of his move, "It's great to be playing for a great Sheffield team. The Scimitars who are pushing forward each season and continually use home grown talent from this area in a league that is the second highest in the country. All of the rest of the teams in the English Premier are the first team in their cities so they can command better business interest from the community. The Scimitars are moving in the right direction with their Academy of junior and senior players, together with an excellent management team, all working in the same direction to bring the very best ice hockey to our city. With only one player being signed up by Basingstoke it leaves a great contingent of British players from Sheffield with some of them playing for Great Britain next season against the countries best. Neil, Les and Martin Birch having been working extremely hard to find the right import players to compliment the Brits. and I am looking forward to this exciting challenge ahead. The guys had a great season last year and to say it was their first season in the English Premier league made it even more incredible. Who would have thought they would make the finals in Coventry and to loose only 3-2 to Nicky Chinn and the Bracknell Bees for the first time in five games. It's now time to finish the job and climb the ladder and take the English Premier League Championship. We have the right team to do it and the management, staff and Ice Sheffield are fully committed to making this happen. I do hope that you the public will come down to Ice Sheffield and watch this great side and make the difference with your support. I must say a special thank you to all my fans that have been behind me all of these years and hope you will keep with me and the Scimitars to complete the job for our City."

When speaking to coach Neil Abel he said "Obviously I am very happy to get Ron here finally. It was after several long conversations over the last couple of months. I am hoping that he will help develop some of the younger members of our squad and also provide some goals at the same time. I think that having several younger players will help Ron and will make it easier on his old bones! This is a great piece of news for all of the Scimitars supporters and he will help bring an exciting element to the squad."
