Match Report | 29th March 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 7-2 Slough Jets
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 28th March 2010
28.3.10
An excellent 4 point weekend for the Scimitars against Play-off opponents Slough Jets, to end the season on a high note. The Jets were at full strength but Scimitars were missing Tom Squires, Simon Butterworth and Mark Turner.
The first period was won well by the Scimitars with goals coming at 5.42 by Matt Haywood as he weaved his way through the Slough defence to shoot through Rockman on the powerplay. This was followed up at 8.41 by James Archer poking in the puck during 4 on 4 play after a great end to end burst through four Jets by Peter Slamiar. Matt Haywood was injured after being hit by a Jet with Steve Duncombe receiving a 10 minute misconduct after. Slough were riding roughshod over the Scimitars but it was the Scims who finished the 1st period in reverse from Saturday, with the home team going 3-0 up after Lee Haywood had roofed the puck into the back of the net on the powerplay at 17.08.
Slough eventually got on the scoreboard at 22.38 with a scorcher along the ice by Billy Philips though Scimitars regained the 3 goal lead when Matt Haywood scored his second at 26.21 against the run of play. Scimitars lost Lewis Bell to a match penalty for accidental high sticks at 27.05 but Sheffield killed off the 5 minute penalty successfully, with Stuart Brittle also having a chance shorthanded. Poljacek scored Slough's second high into the net shortly after at 35.02. Chris Sykes claimed the 5th goal before the period break with the Scimitars going 5-2 up.
The third saw the Scimitars consolidate the lead by taking the period 2-0, Archer scoring his 2nd at 40.55 and Matt Haywood (MOM) with a hat trick rocket which flew past Rockman, after some good puck handling by Mark Stewart to round off a good win at 52.28. A much needed confidence builder for the Scimitars going into the crucial Play-offs against the same team next weekend, with Coventry Finals weekend being the main target.
