Match Report | 23rd March 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-6 Manchester Phoenix
Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 20th March 2010
20.3.10
A home double-header for the Sheffield Scimitars in the penultimate league weekend with Manchester Phoenix and Swindon Wildcats in town.
On Saturday Scimitars had hoped to prevent a clean sweep by the only team they have failed to take any points off this season, but again, the honours went back over the Pennines with Phoenix, despite them missing sniper Ed Courtenay.
A fast and, at times, physical game which swung from periods of dominance by Manchester to some very good offensive play by the Scimitars. The first ten minutes belonged to Phoenix, who looked as though they were on a permanent powerplay. However, a very early goal just 32 seconds into the game was their only reward with a backhander in front of net from Robert Lachowicz. Scimitars worked their way back into the game well with a superb equalising bullet of a goal by James Archer after a great pass from Lee Haywood at 10.14 on the powerplay. A well executed goal set up by Simon Butterworth for Stuart Brittle to finish 4-on-4 at 18.26 gave the Scimitars' a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period.
Tony Hand's Phoenix came out in the second in determined mood and it became like a shooting gallery on Ben Bowns, who made some great saves out of the 18 shots (to 6) put on goal. However, three goals in four minutes gave Manchester the lead starting with Lachowicz for his second at 34.43, Stephen Wallace at 36.05 as he collected his rebound, spun and shot into the net and finally, Adam Walker from Wallace at 38.28 on the powerplay to take the score to 4-2 at end of 2nd period.
Two quickfire goals early in the third period by ex-Scimitar Iain Bowie at 45.53 and 46.57 handed Manchester a 6-2 lead which Scimitars could not challenge. With only 4 shots on goal in the 3rd period, it was an almost impossible task to reduce the goal deficit though they tried hard. Ben Bowns was MOM.
