Match Report | 2nd March 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-3 Basingstoke Bison
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 28th February 2010
28.2.10
An empty-handed weekend for the Sheffield Scimitars, narrowly missing out on at least one point on Sunday as Basingstoke clinched the winner two minutes before the final buzzer, after a loss the previous night in Swindon.
On Sunday, after a delayed start due to broken plexi glass in the warm-up, Scimitars held their own against 4th placed Basingstoke Bison despite icing just two imports.
Early cross-checking penalties on both teams allowed two minutes of 4-on-4 play during which Bison pressured Sheffield's net more. Scimitars became more dominant in the second half of the period following an ineffective powerplay which allowed two short-handed breaks by Lauko and Moria, and another stoppage in play to remove blood from the ice with Nicky Chinn subsequently picking up a 10 misconduct penalty. An accurate pass from Tom Squires driving into the zone found Peter Slamiar in front of net but Tom Annetts got a pad to the puck at the end of a 0-0 first period.
Tom Squires managed some early shots on goal at the start of the 2nd before he sustained an injury and left the game. Scimitars could not find the back of the net during two powerplays despite creating some good opportunities but they did finally manage to break the deadlock at 35.32 on a third powerplay. A slapshot down the centre by James Archer was tipped in by Peter Slamiar to put the Scimitars up 1-0. However this lead did not last long as Bison then scored on a delayed penalty at 37.08 by Oliver Bronniman for a 1-1 end to the second period.
With Butterworth in the box on a 10 minute penalty for torn shorts and Archer in on a tripping penalty, Steve Moria scored a PP goal for Bison at 46.23 to go 2-1 up. Scimitars equalised just over a minute later for the only even-strength goal of the night, at 47.59 as Stuart Brittle brought the puck round from behind the net and in. Scimitars had a great chance to take the lead during a 5-on-3 powerplay but could not find the back of the net. As the clock counted down towards a possible overtime, another Scimitars' penalty at 56.30 allowed Bison to take the lead at 58.05 from a shot by Nicky Chinn which deflected in off a Scimitars' player's shoulder for a 2-3 win. Arran Strawson was Scimitars MOM.
