Match Report | 9th March 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 10-3 Romford Raiders
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 7th March 2010
7.3.10
Sheffield Scimitars broke their losing streak with a resounding 10-3 trouncing of a short-benched Romford Raiders on Sunday, in contrast to the tight 1-2 loss against league-leaders Milton Keynes.
After some fairly even play in the first 10 minutes, a penalty on Romford allowed Mark Stewart to put Sheffield ahead at 10.27. This was quickly followed by a second at 10.43 as Simon Butterworth cut across the face of the net before popping the puck in the back of the net. A third goal nearly followed as James Archer and Matt Haywood crashed the Raiders zone with Matt pinging the puck off the pipework, but they managed to convert the chance next time round as Archer finished at 19.24 for a 3-0 period.
Ben Bowns made a great save as two Raiders beat the defence before another two Scimitars' shots rang off the posts. Raiders then pulled a goal back at 28.48 but Archer replied, rapidly lifting a shot into the top corner at 29.09. Breakouts for both teams did not result in further goals but Chris Wilcox scored off a perfect pass out by Butterworth from behind the net at 35.41, despite leaving the game after being injured the night before.
Scimitars started the third with a 5-1 lead and the hope that this was one lead they could sustain. Peter Slamiar raised it to 6-1 as he turned in front of goal and scored from a Brittle pass at 42.35. Romford killed a penalty and then scored their second but Scimitars responded with Hirst threading through the opposition defence before deking the goalie and calmly slotting home on the left post at 48.17. Raiders did not give up and scored another at 49.36 before Scimitars finished off the game against a tiring Raiders team with Archer claiming his hat trick at 53.06, Lee Haywood a goal at 53.3.0 and Bell at 57.49. A 10-3 win for the Scimitars and MOM for James Archer.
Scimitars travel to Coventry for a mid-week challenge game against the Blaze before they hit the road next weekend, in Manchester on Saturday before travelling down to Guildford on Sunday.
