Match Report | 23rd March 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 1-2 Swindon Wildcats
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 21st March 2010
21.3.10
On Sunday, in the second home game of the weekend, Swindon was the hungrier of the two teams for the two points as they fought to extend their season into the play-offs. Scimitars were still missing Tom Squires but they had Paul Jones back on the ice for the first home game this season following hip surgery.
In a rather lack-lustre 1st period, passes were going astray with little flowing play for either side. There was just the one goal in the period, and it was Swindon who made it onto the scoreboard at 5.16 as Aaron Nell scored the first goal. Not the most skilful period of hockey and with only one penalty.
The second period was similar to the first with just the one goal for Swindon at 36.12 by Sam Bullas, but not a great deal of offence generated by Scimitars, and none that counted despite having 3 powerplays. Simon Butterworth was taken hard into the goal post and had to be helped off the ice, with Lloyd Gibson taking over the forward position. A goal was disallowed following a short-handed break whilst Baird was sitting a delay of game penalty at 36.22. There was no further scoring in the period for a 0-2 scoreline.
Scimitars stepped up the action in the third, but it took until 53.01 for them to get on the scoreboard as Mark Stewart deked the goalie before slotting the puck in behind him. This enlivened the game a little as the Scimitars tried throwing everything at the net to find the equaliser in the final ten minutes of the period, but could not put the puck behind Chris Douglas. The game closed with a 1-2 scoreline and Stuart Brittle was awarded MOM.
The Scimitars take on Slough Jets next weekend in the last of the regular season League games, away in Slough on Saturday and at home, iceSheffield, on Sunday at 5.30pm. This will be the curtain-raiser for a replica Quarter Final Play-off the following weekend against Slough away and home.
