Match Report | 9th March 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 1-2 Milton Keynes Lightning

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 6th March 2010

6.3.10

Scimitars faced off against league leaders Milton Keynes on Saturday and made
them work hard for their 1-2 win in the usual close encounter. Scimitars were icing with just two imports and without Tom Squires due to an injury sustained the previous weekend.

After both teams killed off early penalties in the first six minutes in end-to-end free flowing play. Milton Keynes then took the lead at 7.54 via Kalgoum after he skated across the crease to wrap the puck around and into goal. Both teams were fired up as both needed the points and physical play by MK was the order of the day. Their defence closed down Sheffield's attempts to put shots on Hollyhead in net, restricting scoring chances to just 4 shots as opposed to 9 on Ben Bowns.

There was plenty of action and penalties to kill on both sides in the second period as players clashed but no scoring during the 4 powerplays for each team. This was despite some short-handed breakaways by both sets of players and a 5-on-3 opportunity for MK. Frustration boiled over as MK sandwiched Matt Haywood skating in on goal and he was given a 10 minute misconduct with Zatopek called for hooking. However, once MK returned to full strength they finally doubled their score at 39.47 as Adam Brittle was able to skate round the defence for a well-placed goal.

Bowns came up with some good saves from close-up at the start of the 3rd and Scimitars could not put the puck past Hollyhead during a powerplay despite shots on target from Archer, Slamiar and Stewart. Finally though, Scimitars broke Hollyhead's shutout at 52.49 and almost equalised when a shot from Archer hit the goalie's mask but did not go in. Both sides now increased their efforts and MK thwarted Scimitars attempts to pull the goalie for the extra skater. With just 12 seconds left on the clock the game was delayed after Chris Wilcox was knocked down into the boards which needed blood being cleared from the ice before the game could be finished. With no further scoring the game ended in a 1-2 loss for Sheffield with Stuart Brittle awarded MOM.
