Match Report | 15th March 2010 » Manchester Phoenix 4-1 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Saturday 13th March 2010
13.3.10
On Saturday, Scimitars made the journey over the Pennines to take on the Phoenix with the hope of finally taking two points off their hosts, though again they were thwarted.
The first period saw Phoenix take the lead with the first goal coming at 4.38 even-handed, as Jaakko Hagelberg converted a pass from Tony Hand. Scimitars successfully killed off a penalty as Lewis Bell sat out a high sticking penalty at 10.15. Phoenix doubled their lead at 12.31 after Hagelberg received a holding penalty and Adam Walker put away a short-handed goal assisted by Hand and Andre Mattson. The period ended 2-0 to Manchester and was notable for the low number of shots on target, with Phoenix limiting the Scimitars to a solitary shot on Steve Fone compared to 6 on Ben Bowns.
Manchester doubled their goal tally within the first three minutes of the start of the second as Hagelberg clinched his second at 31.33 just seconds before Lee Haywood's holding penalty was due to expire, again assisted by Hand and Mattson. Approximately a minute later Robert Lachowicz scored, assisted by Joe Graham, to complete Manchester's scoring tally for the game. The 2-0 period ended quietly with just 7 shots a piece and the one penalty.
The game became much more aggravated in the third as Scimitars decided to give some physical play back. Arran Strawson was given 2 minutes for slashing on Tony Hand as well as a 2+2 for roughing, with Hand going to the box also for cross checking and roughing, both at 44.50. Andre Payette then went to the bench to challenge Ben Wilson, who came off the worst, and they were binned for roughing at 46.08. Hagelberg then tangled with Lee Haywood and they joined the others in the box for a 2+2 at 47.15. Scimitars were finally able to get on the scoreboard during a powerplay as Simon Butterworth combined with Stuart Brittle to put the puck behind Fone. Ben Bowns was MOM.
The final score was 4-1 and set up an interesting return bout in the final game of the League series next Saturday at 7.30pm.
