Match Report | 15th March 2010 » Guildford Flames 3-4 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 14th March 2010
3-4 OT 14.3.10
In the second game of their away double-header weekend, Scimitars travelled down to the Spectrum to take on Guildford Flames in the final match-up in the regular season, after their trip to Manchester the previous night.
In front of a large crowd (1,929), Guildford started the game well as Adrian Saul picked up on a rebound from a Nathan Rempel shot and fired the puck in up high for a 1-0 lead at 15.47. Guildford had more of the play but could not make the most of their chances, despite out-shooting Sheffield.
In the second period, Scimitars' Arran Strawson put them on the board with the equaliser at 26.42. Flames regained the lead at 30.50 as Lubomir Hurtaj sunk a cross-ice pass from Milos Melicherik. Guildford again were looking the stronger team, putting 17 shots on goal compared to 8 by the Scimitars. Play became rather chippy as roughing penalties were dished out at 32.53 with Peter Slamiar and Stuart Brittle sitting out minor penalties along with David Savage and Tom Duggan.
Guildford were pegged back a little in the third, though looked to be cruising to a much-needed win when they went 3-1 up courtesy of a strike by Andrew Melachrino at 51.19. However, Scimitars had other ideas and pulled a goal back at when Matt Haywood scored at 54.17 on a delayed penalty. Mark Stewart grabbed the equaliser while Guildford were still short-staffed, as he deked the defence to put the puck in over Lee's pads at 54.37, thus sending the game into overtime.
Mark Stewart broke the Scimitars' poor away form by taking his second of the night just 74 seconds into overtime, ruining Guildford's hope of returning to winning ways after a mini-slump in form. Peter Slamiar was voted MOM with 3 assists and Tom Squires was coaching on the bench with Andy Barton in the absence of Head Coach, Jon Rowbotham.
Sheffield Scimitars have two home matches next weekend, starting with a Manchester on Saturday at 7.30pm followed by Swindon on the Sunday at 5.30pm. Both games are the last meetings between the teams in the regular
season.
