Match Report | 9th February 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-6 Peterborough Phantoms

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 6th February 2010

OT Loss

Sheffield Scimitars were in control of the game against Peterborough on Saturday with a 5-1 lead going into the 3rd period but then the game changed direction as Peterborough fought back to force overtime before they scored the winner to take the two points and move one place above Sheffield in the League table.

A fairly even first period, penalty free and with free flowing hockey allowing some chances for both teams with 7 shots on goal apiece. Matt Haywood managed to clinch the first goal at 19.38 as he backhanded in a pass from Steve Duncombe to take the Scimitars 1-0 into the break.

A quiet start to the 2nd period was short-lived as Matt Haywood claimed his second at 22.45 after the puck deflected into the net near the back post. Phantoms pulled one back at 25.23, tipped in by Maris Zeidins to put them on the board. Ben Wilson was cross checked in Phantoms' crease and Peter Slamiar capitalized at 30.28 on the resulting powerplay. A series of penalties against Peterborough swung the game the Scimitars way when Lewis Bell and Joe Miller clashed giving Scimitars a 4 minute powerplay. Matt Haywood let rip a scorcher at 32.47 for his hat trick to take the Scimitars 4-1 up. Morgan sat out a roughing penalty on Archer, who replied with a goal at 37.33 to end the second 5-1 up. An altercation with the referee after the whistle landed Peterborough's new head coach with a game + match penalty with a bench minor also being given.

Scimitars started the third with a 7 minute powerplay but were unable to increase the score, partly because Peterborough slowly increased their intensity. As the penalties expired, they proceeded to stage a comeback in the following 6 minutes beginning with a PP goal at 48.37 scored by Shaun Yardley. Joe Miller deflected a MacIver shot into the roof of the net at 49.10, followed quickly by another strike at 51.34. Alarm bells were now ringing as the scoreline closed to 5-4 and Sheffield fans' worst fears were confirmed at 53.36 as James Knight banged in the equaliser from Warren Tait for 5-5 score.

Scimitars managed to stem the flow despite a late hooking penalty, to ensure at least a point as the game went into OT, though with the Scimitars playing short-handed. Morgan scored a PP goal just 53 seconds into OT for Peterborough to take their much needed points after a big show of character. Matt Haywood was MOM with his hat trick and Joe Miller for Peterborough.
