Match Report | 2nd February 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 1-2 Slough Jets
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 31st January 2010
31.1.10
Sheffield Scimitars were unable to pick up any points this weekend after 3 games in 4 days, though they only just missed out at home on Sunday when Slough scored the winner at 58.59 in a close game. The away game on Saturday in Basingstoke was not so close with a 5-1 loss.
Scimitars battled hard on Sunday against a side that had put 12 goals past Romford the previous night, keeping them to a single goal for the majority of the game. Scimitars missed an early opportunity to take the lead at the start of the game when they had a two man advantage for two minutes at 2.38 but were prevented from putting any quality shots on the keeper.
Slough scored at 7.47 as Peter Jasik slotted home on the far post unimpeded after a good pass from Munroe. With different line combinations, it took Sheffield much of the 1st period to get into any rhythm, allowing Slough to look the more dominant and forcing Pasi Raitanen in the Scimitars' net to make some excellent stops.
Sheffield competed more on equal terms in the 2nd period with Scimitars hustling constantly for every puck but without being allowed the opportunity to create many good scoring opportunities. With no further goals the 2nd period ended with the score still at 0-1, but with Scimitars having to start the 3rd on a penalty kill.
Slough forced Raitanen to make some close up saves during the early penalty kill, and again Scimitars were denied the equaliser as Peter Slamiar beat the keeper but hit the post. Eventually all the hard work paid off as Matt Haywood was able to bury the puck at 53.21 after some good passing by Simon Butterworth and Stuart Brittle.
With overtime beckoning, another late goal was not what the Scimitars needed. Intensity on both sides had been stepped up in the 3rd period but it was Slough who were able to pick up the puck just inside the blue line on a failed clearance by the Scimitars with Ryan Watt firing it in for the game winner at 58.59 and 2-1 final score. Another hard-working performance by the Scimitars with Pasi Raitanen being awarded MOM for his performance.
