Match Report | 2nd February 2010 » Manchester Phoenix 4-3 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 7.30pm, Thursday 28th January 2010

28.1.10

Sheffield Scimitars travelled to Manchester for the re-arranged fixture cancelled prior to Christmas because of heavy snow. The team was at full strength and including the newly-signed Ben Williams.

Scimitars made an early impression on the game with James Archer scoring just 1.28 into the game after some neat passing between him and Mark Stewart. In a penalty-free first period there was plenty of end to end action before Ed Courtenay collected the puck and skated from his blue line down to score top corner at 15.20 unassisted.

Courtenay put Manchester ahead 2-1 with the only goal of the middle period after a melee around the net with Ben Bowns thwarting initial attempts before Courtenay managed to find a gap between the goalie and the post at 30.30. Towards the end of the second period, he collected a 10 minute misconduct for shooting the puck at the goalie after the whistle had blown and missed the first half of the third period.

Manchester went on the offensive at the start of the third scoring two goals to extend the lead to 4-1. Wallace scored his first against his former club at 42.37 assisted by Tony Hand before Hand put the puck in the net at 46.30. In between, Peter Slamiar had a goal washed out and Lee Haywood went to the penalty box for goalie interference. However, even with Courtenay back on the ice, Mark Turner got his chance to score from a pass by Slamiar at 52.30, and Slamiar took the Scimitars to a 1 goal game at 57.04 unassisted as he weaved through the Phoenix defence before burying the puck. Despite all attempts and a spirited performance, Scimitars could not produce the equaliser and Phoenix collected the two points with a 4-3 win. Steve Duncombe was awarded MOM.

Scimitars travel to Basingstoke on Saturday before returning to iceSheffield on Sunday to take on Slough Jets at 5.30pm.
