Match Report | 27th January 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-4 Romford Raiders

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 23rd January 2010

23.1.10

Scimitars took to the ice with an entirely British team for the first time in their EPL history and were beaten by just the one goal on Saturday at iceSheffield as they took on basement team, Romford. Mark Stewart was serving a match penalty for accidental high sticks and Peter Slamiar was still injured.

A fairly low key first period as Scimitars adjusted to the new lines and with passing not of the best by both teams. Opportunities were created but not converted allowing Romford to be the first on the scoreboard at 13.25. The Scimitars found the newly signed Charles Kaylor determined to impress in the Romford net and made a great double save to deny the Scimitars, who went into the 1st period break at a goal down.

However, Matt Haywood scored the equaliser just 1.23 into the second period but this did not last long as Raiders crashed the crease after a save, pushing Ben Bowns deep into the net and the goal was given after consultation. A scrappy 1-1 period left the Scimitars to fight for an equaliser in the third.

After a team talk, Sheffield increased the offence. Some good early saves were made by both goalies before Chris Wilcox took the score to 2-2 at 44.08. Romford came straight back at 45.26 but Scimitars could not counter that despite plenty of chances as Sladok sat out a 2+2+10 for checking to the head. Two seconds into the penalty, Pliskauskas claimed his 2nd goal of the night as he raced down the ice to score short-handed at 48.41. Scimitars managed a consolation goal by Matt Haywood at 54.21 as they stepped up the pressure, putting 24 shots on goal in the period.

Scimitars outshot the Raiders heavily, 47 to 23, but Kaylor put up a sterling effort in goal to allow Romford to take a rare two points home for the return encounter. A good effort by the short-benched young all-British Scimitars, who worked hard with only a few senior players but could not convert the numerous shots on goal. Chris Wilcox was awarded MOM.
