Match Report | 4th January 2010 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-3 Milton Keynes Lightning

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 3rd January 2010

OT / Penalty SO 3.1.10

A tough weekend for the Scimitars who faced table-topping Milton Keynes at home on Sunday, after the 4-1 loss down in Slough the previous night. Scimitars were missing their Captain, Peter Slamiar, from an injury sustained in Slough but Sheffield pulled up three youngsters from ENL to bolster the squad.

A fairly even first period after killing off an early Mark Stewart penalty. Scimitars had some good chances to take the lead, especially 15 minutes into the game when they had a 2-man advantage for 1.38 minutes but Milton Keynes gave them few opportunities. A hard-working shift brought the first goal for the home team after some great puck control by the whole line before Stephen Wallace was able to lift the puck over Barry Hollyhead at 14.03, assisted by Simon Butterworth and Stuart Brittle for a 1-0 first period.

The second period started with Milton Keynes dominating play in the Scimitars' zone for about the first 8 minutes, putting Pasi Raitanen under pressure as the shots rained in. Once they had claimed their equaliser at 27.58 by Matt Towalski, MK's pace slackened a little as they hit the penalty box. Scimitars re-took the lead at 37.39 on the powerplay as Mark Stewart wrapped the puck round and into the net. Milton Keynes were intent on playing a much more physical game in the second period and beyond as Zatopek flattened Matt Haywood after the buzzer had sounded, and was given 2 minute minor.

Another strong penalty-kill by Milton Keynes prevented Scimitars extending their lead and the physical play continued with Bowers given a 2+10 for cross-checking young Chris Wilcox from behind at 50.47, leaving him flat on the ice for a short while. A tense final 10 minutes ensued as Milton Keynes stepped up the pace looking for the equaliser as the Scimitars fought hard to retain their lead. With an extra man and an empty net in the final minute, Lightning struck cruelly with just 27 seconds left on the clock.

Onto overtime and then a penalty shootout with Adam Brittle denying the Scimitars the double points in the League and last Cup game, in which a win could have given them the chance of a semi-final place. Milton Keynes has already qualified for their semi-final position. Pasi Raitanen was awarded Scimitars' MOM.

The Scimitars next home game is next Saturday, 9th January, 7.30pm at iceSheffield against Bracknell Bees.
