Match Report | 27th January 2010 » Romford Raiders 2-8 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 24th January 2010

24.1.10

The Scimitars travelled down for a quick return match against Romford Raiders on Sunday after a disappointing defeat at home the previous night but with one import, Mark Stewart, back in the line-up.

The Scimitars came out flying in the first period and played with passion and speed. Despite Romford getting on the scoresheet first at 3.14 via their new signing, Darius Pliskauskas, that was little comfort for what was to follow. Arran Strawson tied the game at 4.11 with an EH goal just before Romford lost Dallas Costanzo to a match penalty for accidental high sticks on Lloyd Gibson. This seemed to be a trigger for an onslaught by Sheffield.

James Archer beat the previous night's MOM, Charles Kaylor in Romford's net on the powerplay at 4.43 with Chris Wilcox following close on his heels with another PP goal at 5.47. Scimitars completed the first period with their 4th goal at 19.21 from Lloyd Gibson.

Another flurry of three unanswered goals from Sheffield midway through the second saw them open up a 6 goal lead from Hirst (29.15), Squires (30.34) and Sykes (32.21). Romford managed to pull one goal back at 33.04 to end the period 2-7 and with a change of goalie tightened up their defence.

Just the one goal in the 3rd, scored by Stuart Brittle at 57.43 and with Romford getting increasingly frustrated by the heavy loss, a fight broke out between Dean Tonks and Scimitar Lewis Bell. A much needed win and confidence boost for Sheffield with James Archer being awarded MOM.

Scimitars were beaten by just the one goal on Saturday at iceSheffield as they took on bottom of the League, Romford, with no imports on the ice. Despite outshooting the Raiders heavily, 47 to 23, newly signed Charles Kaylor put up a sterling effort in goal to allow Romford to take a rare two points home for the return encounter. A good effort by the short-benched young all-British Scimitars, who worked hard with only a few senior players but could not convert the numerous shots on goal. Chris Wilcox was awarded MOM.

They travel to Manchester on Thursday evening, 7.30 FO, for their postponed match, then Basingstoke on Saturday before returning to iceSheffield on Sunday to take on Slough Jets at 5.30pm. Tickets available.
