Match Report | 12th January 2010 » Peterborough Phantoms 4-2 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 10th January 2010
10.1.10
Scimitars' Sunday game down in Peterborough was fast-paced and end to end, with the Phantoms playing a very physical game, as did Bracknell the previous night, and Peter Slamiar again one of the targets. Scimitars worked hard and caused the shorter-benched Phantoms some problems, particularly when they scored first, rather against the run of play. Chris Sykes put the rebound away from a shot on goal by Andrew Hirst at 17.30 but Peterborough struck back just before the buzzer with a powerplay goal at 19.46 by Tom Carlon for a 1-1 first period.
Pasi Raitanen, much the busier goalie, particularly in the 2nd period, was on top form saving short-handed breakaways amongst the 21 shots faced. Whilst Morgan was sitting a 10 minute misconduct the Scimitars Stephen Wallace had a chance saved before play went straight down the other end for Carlon to score his 2nd goal at 31.36. However, the lead did not last long as Scimitars fought back at 32.24 when Tom Squires squeezed the puck between the goalie and the post. The Scimitars survived two minutes of 4 on 4 and then killed off a delay of game penalty on Raitanen for dislodging the net, before the close of the 2nd period with the score remained tied at 2-2.
There was no slackening of pace in the 3rd period as both teams tried to take the lead for what was likely to be the winning goal. The Scimitars had a short spell of putting pressure on Wall but it was Peterborough who capitalised via Tom Carlon's hat trick as he slammed home a rebound from in front of net with just 5 minutes left on the clock.
A Scimitars time-out at 57.31 and pulling the goalie only resulted in Peterborough ensuring their 2 points with an empty-net goal at 59.50. MOM went to Pasi Raitanen for Sheffield with 50 saves and Tom Carlon for Peterborough.
A disappointing weekend for the Scimitars after no points from two close games. They remain in 6th League position but with Peterborough on a roll, after 4 wins and 1 OT loss in their last 5 games, the points gap is closing by the game.
