Match Report | 21st December 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 6-2 Romford Raiders

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 19th December 2009

19.12.09

The Scimitars grabbed another two points in their first home game back at iceSheffield in December as they stood their ground to deny the Romford Raiders. It was also a 3rd successive single-game weekend for the Scimitars as their visit to Manchester Phoenix was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

It was a tough battle on Saturday as the Scimitars were running with a short bench of 14, including two young players brought up from the ENL. Steve Duncombe was missing due to illness, the GB U 20's were still away in Hungary winning a Gold medal and Jon Rowbotham was also missing from the bench due to illness.

Despite some early pressure by Scimitars, Romford were first on the scoreboard as Sheffield took two penalties at 9.06, allowing Chris Jones to take advantage of the 5-on-3 opportunity with a goal at 9.43. Penalties disrupted the flow of the game in the first period, but Scimitars gained the upper hand as Peter Slamiar equalized with an even-handed goal at 18.18, tapped in from a pass by Arron Strawson, followed quickly by Mark Stewart as he deked the goalie at 18.48 to end the period 2-1.

Chris Wilcox gave the Scimitars a two goal lead at 32.05 as he lifted a looping shot over the goalie but Harvey pulled it back to a one goal game just 3minutes later as Romford piled the pressure on Pasi Raitanen, forcing many good saves. A scappy 2nd period ended with Sheffield 3-2 up but without looking convincing.

Romford looked threatening going forward but the Scimitars finally settled the nerves when Chris Sykes scored a great goal just inside the far post at 47.05 followed quickly by a Wallace goal at 47.44. Scimitars made it hard on themselves after taking a couple of penalties in the last 5 minutes of the game. Romford pulled the goalie but it was Wallace who found the back of an empty net for the final 6-2 scoreline. Lloyd Gibson was MOM. Romford Raiders looked as though they could spoil the party but the home team dug deep yet again for a good win.

With Manchester hit heavily by snow and the major routes over the Pennines also disrupted, Phoenix cancelled the game and a re-scheduled date will be announced shortly.

The Scimitars next home game is on Sunday 27th December at 5.30pm when Guildford Flames head north, who have suddenly found form with a very successful 20 goal weekend. Tickets available at iceSheffield or on match night.
