Match Report | 28th December 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 0-4 Guildford Flames

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 27th December 2009

27.12.09

Sheffield Scimitars were back to full strength for their encounter against Guildford Flames, who had played the previous night and put 10 goals past their opponents and 30 in the last 3 games. Despite the 0-4 loss, the Scimitars were at least able to contain the Flames to keep the scoreline respectable.

Returning U20's Gold Medal winners, Matt Haywood and Tom Squires, with Ben Bowns in net, were joined by Steve Duncombe returning from illness to take on the currently in-form Flames. The first period was fast paced but with Guildford in charge offensively. A single goal in this period was scored by Guildford's GB U20, Tom Duggan, though not till 18.38, as Ben Bowns repelled all previous attempts thrown on net.

The second period was rather scrappy and though shots on goal were limited by both sides, Bowns had to face two short-handed breakaways early on by Lucas Smital and Nathan Rempel, followed by Guildford's newly signed import Lybomir Hurtaj, who beat two defencemen before striking low behind Bowns to go 0-2 at 27.57. The Flames were given too much room for their more accurate passing and the period ended 0-2 without the Scimitars looking much of a threat, even on several powerplay opportunities and Hurtaj sitting out a 10 minute misconduct penalty..

Hurtaj scored again at 44.04 to widen the gap and Stuart Potts completed the scoring at 47.34. Mark Stewart went with Lundin at 47.42 with both getting some good punches in but Stewart came out on top. The Scimitars were unable to get many real quality shots on Mark Lee to trouble him and the score remained 0-4 to the end of the game. Ben Bowns and Hurtaj were awarded MOM awards, with James Archer receiving the Supporters' Club Player of the Month award.

After the game the special festive shirts were auctioned off with proceeds going to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and the Club. The Scimitars start a busy New Year fixture list with a visit to Slough on 2nd January before a home match at iceSheffield on Sunday 3rd January against table-topping Milton Keynes at 5.30pm.
