Match Report | 2nd December 2009 » Milton Keynes Lightning 3-2 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 7.00pm, Saturday 28th November 2009

28.11.09

Sheffield Scimitars travelled down to Milton Keynes on Saturday to try and repeat their recent good win there in October. They were without top scorer Robert Farmer, who had been called up to the Steelers in their Continental Cup bid, so coach Jon Rowbotham had to reset the lines. It resulted in a close fought game that could have gone either way.

After a slow start during which Milton Keynes looked the more dominant, Scimitars started to drive forwards and in a great shift, Matt Haywood put the Sheffield on the scoreboard at 6.36 assisted by Lloyd Gibson and Arran Strawson. This was followed up by another foray on goal before Sheffield picked up their first penalty, with Ben Bowns called into action several times.

The Lightning equalised after the Scimitars struggled to clear their zone allowing Radmall to capitalise. Shortly afterwards, Mk had a goal ruled out as the whistle had blown for a man in the crease. Hollyhead made a save off a high rebound but at 11.67 he had to stack his pads to prevent Mark Stewart scoring. However, Matt Haywood was in position and seized the chance to lift the loose puck over the prostrate goalie for a 2-1 lead into the first period break, despite the shot count of 9-24 on Bowns and a powerplay for MK following some roughing between Strawson and Towalski.

Milton Keynes came out strong in the second and equalised early at 21.54. The Scimitars had problems maintaining possession and were prevented from mounting any real offence, even during a powerplay, which is reflected in a 12-3 shot count. The Scimitars continued to work hard against a slicker-passing opposition but without result.

In the final period, the game was a little more evenly balanced and the Scimitars were able to drive the net a little more. However, Milton Keynes grabbed the winning goal at 47.15 and despite a powerplay and pulling the goalie, Scimitars were unable to find the equaliser. Matt Haywood was MOM with 2 goals but the team as a whole worked hard throughout the match.
