Match Report | 7th December 2009 » Guildford Flames 4-8 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 6th December 2009
6.12.09
Sheffield Scimitars played just the one game this weekend, away from home against Guildford. Despite missing their top goal scorer, Robert Farmer, who was playing for the Steelers, Scimitars romped home with a goal bonanza at the Spectrum, especially good after drawing a blank last weekend. This was their first win there for a long while and they did it in style, along with a MOM performance by Ben Bowns in goal.
It looked as though it was another typical game for Sheffield in Guildford after going down by 2-0 in the first 14 minutes after goals from Nathan Rempel at 9.22 and Rob Lamey at 13.16. However, Scimitars did not give up and fought back, firstly through Matt Haywood at 14.34 and then Peter Slamiar on the powerplay at 17.02 to take a 2-2 tie into the first period break. Guildford had played some great offensive hockey in the first 10 minutes which had the Scimitars on the back foot, but once the Scimitars scored their first goal, Guildford seemed to fade away.
Matt Haywood struck early in the 2nd period for his second goal at 21.36 to take a 3-2 lead. Guildford then had the opportunity to equalise during a 5-on-3 powerplay with Mark Stewart and Steve Duncombe in the penalty box, but they were thwarted. However the Flames did score at 5-on-5 shortly after at 37.16 as Martin Masa struck home. The Flames hopes of a revival were short-lived as Mark Stewart slotted home a PP goal at 37.49 to take the lead again.
Guildford swapped their goalies for this period, replacing Dean Skinns with last year's Scimitars Mark Lee. This did not stop the rot though as with just 8 seconds on the clock at the start of 3rd period, Stewart netted a second time to go 5-3 up despite Scimitars again being outshot. James Archer's powerplay goal at 51.44 began to widen the gap between both teams and Stephen Wallace's goal in under another minute reinforced that lead. Mark Turner, playing up as a replacement for Farmer in this game, completed Scimitars' scoring though Guildford managed a consolation 4th goal at 56.57 by Lucas Smital. With Scimitars being outshot by 54 to 29, Ben Bowns earned a well-deserved MOM award in another spirited team performance by all.
Jon Rowbotham said after the game " Last week's practice was all geared towards working on a different set of systems to exploit Guildford's free flowing type of hockey. After a shaky start, the team stuck rigidly to the game plan . At the back, Ben Bowns had an outstanding game, as did the special teams, who deserve special mention. We lost Robert Farmer, our top points accumulator, to the Steelers for this game, but the close team unit pulled together even further and I was impressed with them".
The Scimitars will be missing their GB U20's players - Ben Bowns, Matt Haywood, Tom Squires (and Rob Farmer) for the next 3 games as they head off for the World Championships in Debrecen.
Scimitars are away again next weekend for just a single game, down in Swindon on Saturday before returning home to iceSheffield on Saturday 19th December, 7.30pm against Romford Raiders.
