Match Report | 3rd November 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-3 Basingstoke Bison
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 1st November 2009
1.11.09
Another excellent weekend for the Scimitars earning them maximum points against higher ranked teams to lift them to 5th place in the Premier League.
The Scimitars returned home to iceSheffield to face Basingstoke Bison after having won the last three out of their four road games so expectations were running high especially after hitting both Slough and Basingstoke with 3-0 first periods.
After a late return from Slough the previous night, the Scimitars looked sharp in the first period on Sunday. With a Bison player in the penalty box, the Scimitars took advantage of the powerplay with a goal at 5.25 after some fancy footwork by Lee Haywood set up Stephen Wallace to score past Davey Lawrence.
Just 22 seconds later, after some superb tic-tac-toe passing from Farmer to Brittle to Matt Haywood who finish it well at 5.47. Arran Strawson then was able to flick up a rebound off the goalie's pad save from a Mark Stewart strike at 6.42 to complete the first period scoring of 3-0, though with both teams having chances saved.
The second period saw Bison increase the pace, though perhaps the Scimitars eased off a little, allowing Basingstoke to close the deficit. Their first goal came at 24.18 after Hemmings tapped the puck in on the back post after a short-handed Ciccarello breakaway. Scimitars called a time-out at 29.09 after they had come under some pressure but Bison struck back almost immediately with a top-shelf bullet from Nicky Chinn at 29.32. A fast period of end to end play with Ben Bowns making a great save from a screened shot before the end of the second.
Basingstoke increased their pressure on goal in the third with an equalising goal at 41.53 by Chinn but James Archer regained the lead for the Scimitars at 41.53 with a superbly taken goal as he faked a shot before deking the goalie to then score with a backhander on the back post.
Play continued end to end at full speed as Bison turned up the pace and pressure but were kept out by solid hardworking defence and Bowns in net. Wallace's 2nd goal of the game added the insurance giving the 5-3 win to the Scimitars after 100% team effort. Returnee Mark Stewart was awarded MOM on his home debut.
The Scimitars next home game is on Sunday 8th November v Slough Jets at 5.30pm.
