Match Report | 18th November 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-5 Manchester Phoenix
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 15th November 2009
15.11.09
A tough weekend for the Sheffield Scimitars, breaking their six game winning streak after a long and difficult road journey down to Bracknell on the Saturday before taking on top of the League Manchester Phoenix for the 5th time this season on Sunday.
Despite the biggest ever attendance for a Sheffield Scimitars game at Ice Sheffield with over 850 spectators in the building, the Scimitars just cannot seem to get the upper hand over their near neighbours Manchester Phoenix, going down 2 to 5 at ice Sheffield on Sunday evening.
The game started brightly enough for Sheffield who took the lead on 4:00 minutes through a powerplay goal by Peter Slamiar. The fans were treated to some fast and physical hockey with the Scimitars edging the play in the 1-0 first period.
It was a different story in the second period as Manchester grabbed two quick goals within the first 5 minutes of the re-start following some very sloppy play by Sheffield. This short spell effectively gifted the game to the Phoenix after another two quick goals gave Phoenix a 4 -1 lead going in to the final period as Tony Hand, Ed Courtenay and Adam Walker turned up the heat and combined for all the goals in the game.
But Scimitars were not done and Coach Rowbotham has a well drilled and disciplined side and their work ethic is second to none which earned a 2nd goal on 46 minutes. This kicked started a period of prolonged pressure but the Scimitars could not find the back of the net with local lad Steve Fone in goal for the Phoenix keeping the Sheffield forwards at bay. A further goal for the Phoenix at 49.52 sealed the game which ended 2-5 with MOM's going to Steve Fone for Phoenix and Simon Butterworth for Scimitars.
