Match Report | 10th November 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-1 Slough Jets

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 8th November 2009

8.11.09

The Scimitars knew that Slough Jets would be coming into Sheffield to avenge their 3-7 demolition on home ice the previous week and both coaches would have prepared well for the return bout. Also both teams had had good wins the previous night against tough opposition and it showed at times.

The first period belonged to the Scimitars, who out-shot Slough with some excellent scoring chances but which Rockman somehow got to and saved. A short-handed breakaway by Joe Greener was stopped by James Archer though with a penalty shot awarded, and saved by Ben Bowns. Still on the powerplay, Peter Slamiar fired in a shot from centre blueline at 5.50 for the lead, with a second excellent opportunity at 16.42 by Matt Haywood, which was deemed not to be a goal.

The Jets came out stronger and more determined in the second, out-muscling and out-shooting Sheffield. Mark Stewart got punched to the ice after a clash on the boards with Adam Greener but the Scimitars could not capitalise on the resulting powerplay. Slough finally equalised at 37.12 with Poljacek scoring.

The third period also belonged to Slough with increased pressure on net but Bowns again stopped all shots thrown at him. Both teams increased the pace during the final stanza to try and claim the two points but Scimitars were limited to just 4 shots on target by Slough.

Overtime ensued with 4-on-4 but with no headaches for Sheffield on watching import numbers during OT. Slough had a goal washed out with 1.13 left as the whistle had already been blown and Scimitars spent the rest of OT defending.

Penalty shots followed with Farmer and Slamiar scoring for the Scimitars and Long for Slough. A hard-earned win and two points for the Scimitars to remain 5th in the League but with Slough and Guildford only one point ahead. MOM went to Ben Bowns for another excellent performance and win.
