Match Report | 9th November 2009 » Peterborough Phantoms 2-5 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Saturday 7th November 2009
7.11.09
The Sheffield Scimitars travelled down to Peterborough with their confidence high after four consecutive wins under their belt, but with the knowledge that Peterborough also had picked up their first back-to-back wins last weekend.
It turned out to be a superb team performance with Jon Rowbotham's team fully energized for 60 minutes, outclassing the Phantoms as they fought for every puck, in the corners, on the boards and centre ice.
Tom Squires opened the Scimitars' account at 02.58 to give them a confidence boost. The first period was all high tempo action with the Scimitars either on the offence or stripping the puck off incoming Phantoms players to prevent them from setting up many good scoring chances. Those that did get through were turned away well by Ben Bowns in net.
The Scimitars went 2-0 up at 22.18 after Wallace made no mistake when he pounced on a rebound from a Squires shot which left Wall out of position on the far side. MOM Warren Tait scored their first goal in the 2nd period at 25.00 minutes and this seemed to give the Phantoms a lift, however the only time Peterborough really looked as though they had the upper hand was for a short spell in the Scimitars' zone, during a 4-on-4 play at 35.37 as Lee Haywood and Smith sat out a roughing penalty. Bowns looked sharp to prevent Peterborough equalising and the 2nd period closed on a 1-2 scoreline.
The Phantoms were still in with a good chance at the beginning of the third period but the Scimitars never gave up skating, passing and hustling them off the puck with every line making chances in front of net. The excellent number of travelling Scimitars' supporters were able to relax after a great goal by Mark Stewart after Peter Slamiar fed him a pass which he flicked up over the shoulder of Wall at 47.43 to go 1-3 up. The Phantoms went into disarray as the Scimitars piled on the pressure with Archer, from Wallace combining well to create another great goal at 51.22.
The game had still more to come as high sticks penalty on Slamiar gave Peterborough the chance to direct some rubber at Bowns but he made some great saves through traffic, followed by Matt Haywood sending an accurate pass to Stewart Brittle who slotted home the 5th goal at 55.22. The Phantoms claimed a consolation goal at 59.22 for a final scoreline of 2-5 and MOM for Robert Farmer.
