Match Report | 12th October 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-7 Guildford Flames
Face Off: 7.30pm, Wednesday 7th October 2009
7.10.09
Fortunately this was a rare mid-week encounter for which the Scimitars traditionally never seem to do well in, though they ran a close contest during the first two periods, and were missing defenceman Steve Duncombe through illness.
A tight first period scoreline though the Scimitars were outshot 13-4 with Ben Bowns kept busy keeping the puck out of the Scimitars net. The Scimitars were made to work hard by the more experienced Flames but there was some good passing and play by both sides. Stuart Potts opened the account for Guildford at 6.15 , assisted by Rick Plant for a 0-1 scoreline at the end of the first period.
Sheffield increased their pace in the 2nd and put the pressure on Guildford for the first half of that period. The Scimitars raised the spirits of the crowd when they scored at 29.44 as Simon Butterworth put one past Skinns, assisted by Robert Farmer and Tom Squires, shortly after the Flames had successfully killed off three minor penalties. The Scimitars then took the lead at 31.46 when Farmer took the puck rink-length and calmly slotted it high in the net for 2-1.
However Guildford raised their game and netted at 33.53 by Potts, followed quickly by a PP goal at 35.55 from Lundin to restore their lead. Scimitars, not to be outdone, came back again to end the period 3-3 at 39.00 when Millqvist fired into the net from a Butterworth pass to win that period.
Guildford scored 4 unanswered goals in the 3rd period as the Scimitars defence tired. A short-handed Rempel goal at 40.52 was followed by another at 50.17 by MOM Martin Masa despite Bown's making some great saves. The final two goals were empty netters for a flattering 7-3 scoreline for Guildford and MOM for the Scimitars went to Lewis Bell.
The Scimitars travel to Manchester for their only game this weekend with the next home game on Saturday 17th October at 7.30pm.
