Match Report | 12th October 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-4 Swindon Wildcats
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 4th October 2009
4.10.09
On Sunday, against Swindon, Millqvist fired the first shot on goal after he intercepted a pass from Krakicek, followed shortly after by a Sheffield powerplay but with no conversion. There was some fast flowing and end-to-end hockey with both netminders denying the opposition's good scoring chances and despite some physical play there were only four minutes of penalties on each side in the 0-0 first period.
Rather against the run of play with Sheffield attacking early in the second, Swindon scored first at 24.59 through Alan Green. Josef Kohut added a second goal shortly after to take Swindon 2-0 up. However the Scimitars fought back well and on a double powerplay advantage, Robert Farmer tipped the puck in off a Peter Slamiar shot on net after some good passing from Millqvist at 31.32. A second powerplay goal followed at 32.09 as Tom Squires lifted the puck into the roof of the net, assisted by Millqvist and Slamiar for a second period 2-2 score. Steve Duncombe had to leave the game near the end of the first period after being hit in the mouth by a puck but returned part way through the second after receiving some sutures to the wound.
With ten minutes left in the game the Scimitars applied pressure on the opposition net but could not find the winner. Swindon did find that winner via Aaron Knell at 50.55 to regain the lead and they then doubled this at 56.41 via Kohut for his second goal of the night after he raced into the zone at speed. With the Scimitars goalie pulled a minute from the end, Matt Haywood scored at 59.38 assisted by Squires and Millqvist. A desperate final 22 seconds for the Scimitars but the equaliser evaded them despite a final strike on goal as the buzzer went.
Some good individual and team effort at times but Swindon stalled the Scimitars' style of game with their physical play. Ben Bowns was awarded MOM for the Scimitars, with Krajicek for Swindon.
