Match Report | 26th October 2009 » Romford Raiders 2-6 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 6.15pm, Sunday 25th October 2009

25.10.09

The Sheffield Scimitars grabbed an excellent 4 point weekend on the road after their recent player changes, firstly a great steal against top of the Premier League, Milton Keynes Lightning on Saturday, followed by another determined effort against Romford Raiders on Sunday.

On Sunday in Romford the 0-0 first period was a tight affair with both teams having some chances with shots on goal but to no avail as the goalies kept their sheets clean.

The second period saw the floodgates open in terms of goals and penalties. Tom Squires opened the Scimitars account at 25.31 with an even-handed unassisted goal. As Romford's Jason Buckman sat out a tripping penalty, Matt Haywood scored his first at 27.57. Jesse Hammill, player/coach, upset Romford's rhythm by taking a series of penalties starting with a 2 + 10 minutes for a checking to the head, combined with a 2+2 for roughing against Lee Haywood who also received a coincidental 2+2 for roughing.

The Scimitars then scored 3 rapid goals to put them well on top of the game, starting with Matt Haywood with the third goal, and his second of the night at 34.57, Simon Butterworth with the fourth at 35.15 followed by the fifth at 35.33 by Robert Farmer. Romford reduced the deficit by two with strikes at 34.05 and 36.54 to end the period 2-5 down.

Everything settled down again in the third with no penalties and just the one goal for the Scimitars at 57.24 scored by Matt Haywood for his first hat trick, and a final 2-6 scoreline. Ben Bowns produced several great saves to earn himself MOM award.

The Sheffield Scimitars next home game is on Sunday, 1st November, 5.30pm v Basingstoke Bison at iceSheffield.
