Match Report | 12th October 2009 » Basingstoke Bison 4-3 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.30pm, Saturday 3rd October 2009
4-3 OT 3.10.09
The Sheffield Scimitars travelled down to Basingstoke for their first ever confrontation with the Bison and came away with a point after a hard-fought match.
Although Basingstoke took an early lead at 0.48 courtesy of Oliver Bronnimann, the Scimitars were quick to respond as Joakim Millqvist netted, assisted Tom Squires, to equalise at 2.18 on the powerplay after an elbows penalty. Robert Farmer then put the Scimitars ahead at 9.27, again assisted by Squires and on the powerplay, for a 1st period 1-2 score but with Pasi Raitanen superbly holding the fort after the Bison lay siege to Scimitars goal with 23 SOG to only 6 on Davey Lawrence.
The Scimitars grabbed another EH unassisted goal by Tom Squires at 32.34 to go 3-1 but then were guilty of sitting back until Bison's Bronnimann pegged it back at 35.25 with a PP goal and his second of the night.
The Chinn, Bronnimann and Lauko line were dominant throughout the match, causing the Scimitars problems. Bison equalised in the 3rd period on 50.08 by new import Andrej Lauko to force overtime before taking the two points with another goal at 63.29 by Lauko for a 4-3 win. Raitanen won MOM for a superb performance between the pipes.
Head coach Jon Rowbotham felt that the game should have been won by the Scimitars as they played very well in parts but the message was that they need to concentrate for the full 60 minutes of every game.
