Match Report | 30th September 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 4-2 Peterborough Phantoms

Face Off: 7.30pm, Saturday 19th September 2009

19.9.09

The Scimitars faced a tough start to the season as their opening game was against last year's Grand Slam winners, Peterborough Phantoms but they came through with flying colours to clinch the first two points.

The Scimitars were still missing Steve Duncombe this weekend through injury from the previous Manchester derby, though Lewis Bell was back in action. The Phantoms had lost some of their top players from last season but with some new additions and in particular a new coach.

The Scimitars came out of the blocks fast in the first period and dominated large portions of the first period. They created some great scoring chances which were thwarted by an in-form goalie, Stephen Wall. However, it was Peterborough who took the lead at 12.41 by Maris Zeidins, completely against the run of play.

The Scimitars hit back though at 18.50 during a 5-on-5 powerplay, with Morgan sitting in the penalty box for his second visit of the game. Wallace was at hand to put away the 2 second rebound from shots by Daniel Slyk for a 1-1 end to the 1st period. Shots on goal 19 on Wall to 4 on Raitanen demonstrated the Scimitars dominance.

The second period opened with Peterborough looking more focussed after an interval talk. The Scimitars continued to press forward but several chances were either saved or not converted until 25.11 when Peter Slamiar took the lead by again destroying the defence. Lewis Buckman managed to equalise at 33.43 only to have it removed at 38.00 as Sheffield regained the lead through a punchy shot from Slamiar. A more even-handed 2nd period which ended 2-1.

The Phantoms kept their penalty tally down in 2nd & 3rd periods which helped their chances a little, but the two they had handed the Scimitars a 5 on 4 powerplay, during which Slamiar struck again at 56.58, assisted for the second time by Squires and Lee Haywood. The referee had to leave the game following a fall after he was crunched on the boards by a Phantoms player and suffered concussion just over a minute from the final whistle.

The Scimitars looked fitter, sharper and more hungry for the win than the Phantoms and the fans enjoyed a feisty game but with some skilful hockey. An excellent first home league game result against the 2008-9 trophy winners and a game well worth the entrance fee.

Stephen Wallace earned himself the Scimitars MOM award whilst the Phantoms MOM went to goalie, Stephen Wall for his excellent shot-stopping to keep the Scimitars from racking up the score.
