Match Report | 17th September 2009 » Sheffield Scimitars 2-5 Sheffield Steelers
Face Off: 7.30pm, Wednesday 16th September 2009
The Sheffield Scimitars challenged the Steelers to a mid-week testing of skills before the clash with the Peterborough Phantoms this coming Saturday, and many will be asking where were the team from last weekend was in the first period?
Ian Johnson's reply was 'Unfortunately that's not a question that I have the answers to, but I suppose we simply gave the Steelers a little too much respect! They seemed to pass the puck around us effortlessly, and without the effort shown by Ben Bowns and Lee Haywood, one might say we got away lightly at 4 - 0, at the end of the first period'.
'I had a bad feeling about the evening when we were informed that the scoreboard wasn't working and that the clock wouldn't operate during the game! Never mind, Ade did his best in keeping us all up to speed, albeit verbally!'
The Steelers were the first to score at 03.33 through Joe Talbot, assisted by Jeff Legue. This was followed by another at 7.05 via a strike by Jeff Hutchins as the Steelers were passing stick to stick for fun. Goal 3 came at 12.37 from Legue in a first of a double, the second being at 18.30 for 4-0 first period.
The Scimdogs came out into the 2nd period with more composure and direction and it wasn't long before Slamiar had hit one back, but the Scimitars come-back was short lived as the Steelers struck again to take them into the 3rd period at 5 1.
In the final period, the Scimitars were more settled, composed and eager to win the 50 / 50 pucks, which was clear for all to see. Slamiar was back on target to take his 2nd of the evening which was all his own doing as he destroyed the Steelers defence by threading his way the length of the ice through the opposition before hitting the back of the net for a 1-0 period.
Ian Johnson continued 'The score was 5-2 at the final whistle, and at least for 2 periods the Scimitars were competitive, and even came out on top in the last period, but for the first period we could only stand and wonder at the quality, speed and cohesion which the Sheffield Steelers demonstrated to devastating effect'.
'I would like to thank Dave, Mike, Betty and the Steelers fans for their support this evening, along with the usual suspects our side'
Jon Rowbotham will certainly have taken a lot from this game in preparation for Saturday night, so that's got to be a positive.
The Scimitars are in action at home again on Saturday 19th September when they face last season's treble title winners, Peterborough Phantoms at 7.30pm
